This vast bay area is not just one of Asia’s most spectacular natural wonders, protected as a World Heritage Site, but one big tourist attraction in itself and one of Vietnam’s most iconic sights. Northern Vietnam’s stuff of legends, this ‘Bay of Descending Dragons’ presents an ethereal seascape of 2,000-plus limestone islands and rock formations magically jutting out of the Gulf of Tonkin’s emerald-hued waters. Halong Bay’s southern extension, the extraordinarily beautiful Lan Ha Bay, reveals equally stunning scenery, but as a relatively new tourism destination with fewer tourist vessels passing through, offers a more remote, tranquil experience.

Ban Amphur is a quiet fishing village that happens to have a beautiful beach with gorgeous sand and lots of palm trees. The beach is quiet and uncrowded with ample parking unlike many of the other beaches in Pattaya, because it is a fishing village the various seafood restaurants that are located in the fishing harbor sell the most delicious and fresh fish imaginable. Tourism has not yet caught up here as much as so many places so prices are still quite low and the area uncrowded.

Be flexible! It is important to be flexible with your travel dates. If you insist on finding a plane ticket, say, only from Thursday to Thursday, and do not accept a trip from Saturday to Wednesday, you may pay double. A flight to Naples, which you can normally find for less than 100 euros, stung our pocket, because we chose to visit Italy at Easter. I paid about 400 euros per person. Not strictly in Pattaya but half way between there and Bangkok sits Flight of the Gibbon, a complete adventure for the whole family. An excellent opportunity to have a lot of fun whilst taking in some beautiful views of the jungle. The course is three kilometers long and consists of twenty two zip-lines as well as two abseiling stations. With an impeccable safety record this is the one place in Thailand where you should feel completely safe whilst doing something you would not do back at home.

Your best chance to see whales is on a boat-based whale cruise. Watching massive whales from a boat is one of the most exciting things to do in Cape Town. The boats are in contact with each other and often know where the whales are, some even use drones to scout. Some of the boats have permits to get very close to the whales, not closer than 50m. The whales do not always care about these rules and often swim right up to the boat, of course, makes for fantastic encounters. Most of the tours take about 2 hours, the boats are fairly big and stable, to get seasick is however still possible. Most of the tours offer snacks and drinks on board. Don’t worry if ocean conditions are not perfect, they should allow you to sit inside the cabin and call everyone outside when whales are spotted.
